FOCUS OF THE DAY: HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched a new campaign to target solicitors’ unpaid taxes, through which lawyers can choose to bring their tax affairs up to date or face tougher penalties in 2015. Through HMRC’s ‘Solicitors’ Tax Campaign’, lawyers will be able to take part in the campaign by signing up before 9 March 2015, and make a payment with a reduced fine until the 9 June 2015. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) is to offer bespoke management training for legal aid firms and not-for-profit organisations. According to LAPG, these providers have traditionally found it difficult to focus on management due to a lack of time, resources and management expertise. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Bar Council has warned of a potential “cost to quality”, following an announcement from the Bar Standards Board (BSB) that from next month it will only accredit CPD providers, and not individual courses. Nicholas Lavender QC, chairman of the Bar Council, welcomed “any moves towards a less heavy-handed form of regulation” but said quality was “an inevitable concern for any form of self-accreditation”.
