Focus of the Day Law Article: The government’s longest serving justice minister, Lord Keen of Elie (Richard Keen QC), has resigned in the latest twist to the row over whether proposed Brexit legislation would break international law. The Blackstone Chambers barrister said he had 'found it increasingly difficult to reconcile' his obligations as a lawyer with provisions in the Internal Market Bill. Today's Highlighted Video Story:  Australia will soon ban exporting rubbish and recycling overseas if a bill currently before parliament is passed. The proposed laws are being examined by a Senate committee this week. Some in the industry are worried more waste will end up in landfill.

Focus of the Day Law Article: Pressure is growing in the Advocate General for Scotland, Lord Keen of Elie QC, to refuse to give his consent to the proposed UK Internal Market Bill. The bill allows ministers to “disapply” rules agreed over the goods that cross between Britain and Northern Ireland. Section 45(1) of the bill states that certain provisions “have effect notwithstanding any relevant international or domestic law with which they may be incompatible or inconsistent”.. Today's Highlighted Video Story:  New laws banning people from meeting in groups of more than 6 have come into force in England, Scotland and Wales. In England, where fines of up to £3,200 apply, the Home Office minister Kit Malthouse urged people to report their neighbours to police if they're seen breaking the new laws. But guidance has yet to be issued to police forces on how to enforce the rules which differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Today's Highlighted Video Story: The attacker behind New Zealand's worst mass shooting has been sentenced to life in prison, without the chance of parole. Brenton Tarrant killed 51 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch last year. In March this year, Tarrant surprised prosecutors by entering a guilty plea, and his sentencing may help provide some closure and healing.
