Today's Video Focus:  US officials have said that it's highly likely that it was an Iranian missile that brought down a passenger plane yesterday. All 176 people on board the Ukrainian International Airline flight were killed when it crashed just outside Tehran. Iran initially blamed an engine fire for the crash, and it seems the strike was a tragic accident.

Today's Video Focus:  A student from Indonesia has been identified as Britain's most prolific rapist after being convicted of more than 150 offences, including 136 rapes. In four separate trials, Reynhard Sinaga, 36, was found guilty of assaulting 48 men whom he drugged after taking them back to his apartment from outside bars and clubs in the city of Manchester. 


Focus of the Day article: Detainees at police stations reportedly had to wait hours to see a solicitor on New Year's Day, after the Legal Aid Agency's call centre system went down. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, detainees are entitled to free and independent advice at any time while in police detention. Solicitors are deployed through the Defence Solicitor Call Centre. However, police reportedly had to call solicitors directly on New Year's Day after the website went down at midnight for nearly five hours. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

Today's Video Focus:  Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó was prevented by security forces from entering the National Assembly building in Caracas to take part in a vote to re-elect him as Speaker. In chaotic scenes on Sunday, he attempted to climb over a fence but was pushed back by national guard officers. Inside the chamber, a group of dissident opposition lawmakers formed a bizarre alliance with members of President Nicolás Maduro's Socialist party and chose Luis Parra, a former Guaidó ally, as Speaker. Some Guaidó loyalists managed to enter the building, and fighting between rival opposition politicians broke out. 


Focus of the Day article: A year of disruption, disappointment, contention and uncertainty is finally drawing to a close. On 19 December, with Christmas around the corner, the country got a hint of what 2020 might bring. The Queen’s Speech, in which the new Conservative government laid out its legislative priorities for the year to come, included more than 30 bills the government hopes to turn into law. As a woman who chooses to wear a veil, she explains how criticism from industry professionals who told her "the veil and hip hop don't flow together" drove her to succeed, and inspired her to tackle other controversial societal issues in her lyrics such as child marriage, rape and infanticide. She performs both as a solo artist and as part of an all-female rap movement, Genji Hip Hop, who use their music to fight cultural stereotypes and gender violence.
