It has seen an average of eight murders a day, for the first six months of this year. In one weekend in July, 43 people were killed. The South African Army has now been deployed to help stop the violence. In some cases, residents are forming vigilante groups.

The Queen has appointed Scottish judge Lord Reed as the next President of the UK’s Supreme Court, succeeding Baroness Hale. He will take up his new role on 11 January 2020, the day after Lady Hale retires. She has served as President since September 2017.

Today's Video Focus: Cricketer MS Dhoni, the former India skipper, who is also a Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) in the Parachute Regiment of the Territorial Army, will be serving with his unit from July 31 to August 15, 2019. MS Dhoni will be with the unit in the Kashmir Valley as a part of Victor Force. It was also made clear that as requested by the officer and approved by Army Headquarters, MS Dhoni will be taking on the duties of patrolling, guard and post duty and would be staying with the troops. MS Dhoni is a civilian and his safety in the Valley has been a general concern since the news broke out on Thursday.

Today's Video Focus: In January this year, Alex Ross-King attended the FOMO Festival in Sydney's west and died after taking three ecstasy tablets. She was only 19. Her death is one of six recent drug-related deaths at musical festivals - all of them now the subject of an inquiry overseen by the New South Wales Deputy Coroner Harriet Grahame. The coroner may make recommendations to try to avoid future deaths. On the weekend, she was at the Splendour in the Grass music festival in northern New South Wales to take a look at one measure that could possibly be introduced - pill testing.

A year after the government announced a U-turn over legal aid for vulnerable migrant children, the Ministry of Justice has finally laid draft legislation in parliament to make good on the promise. Once the statutory instrument, laid yesterday afternoon, is approved by parliament, immigration and citizenship matters for under-18s separated from their parents, or who are looked after by a local authority, will be brought back into the scope of legal aid. The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 cut swaths of civil law from the scope of public funding. Special provision was made for children under 18 in family law proceedings to obtain legal aid but not for migrant children.

An “effective system” is needed for monitoring the quality of criminal defence lawyers, a report by charity Transform Justice has found. The report singled out “poor remuneration” as the biggest barrier to improved quality and complained of “perverse financial incentives”.
