Today's Video Focus: Despite its reputation as a haven for refugees, Canada has been deporting North Korean asylum seekers who came to the country through South Korea. Nearly 2,000 have been sent away since 2013 because the government says they lied on their asylum application forms.


Focus of the Day Story: Court hearings via video are to be piloted this spring, starting with tax appeals. HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) said it was writing to potential participants this week to invite them to take part in the pilot. The video hearings will take place over the internet, with each participant logging in from a location of their choice, using a webcam and, for the purposes of the pilot, the judge located in the courtroom. The scam which has shaken up the banking sector to the core has also triggered a political earthquake. Focus of the Day Story: The Nuffield Foundation has today set out its plans to establish a Family Justice Observatory that will support the best possible decisions for children by improving the use of data and research evidence in the family justice system in England and Wales. A 12-month development phase will begin in March this year, delivered by a team appointed by the Foundation. The development phase will build the infrastructure and operating model for the Observatory, followed by a 4-5 year pilot delivery phase, to begin in spring 2019. Full story - Family Law Week
