Focus of the day story: Two-thirds of regional law firms are failing to meet their performance targets and 40% say equity partner profits are falling. By contrast, the City is shrugging off the threat posed by Brexit - over 90% of practices report increasing revenue and four in ten say partner profits are up by over 10%. These are among the key findings of a new benchmarking survey by the accountants Crowe Clark Whitehill. In the regions, one in five firms saw revenue fall in the latest financial year, the same proportion as in the last survey. Today's video story: From Afghanistan to London, cricket is helping three young refugees build a new life. Tucked away in suburban south London, matches take place every week for young and often traumatised asylum seekers. Many have fled war and have been separated from their families. The Refugee Cricket project, organised by the Refugee Council - https://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk - , provides not only a chance to play and make friends, but also to access advice and support as they navigate the complex asylum system and other challenges in their new home.



Focus of the day story: The government is to recalculate the personal injury discount rate again, after a Ministry of Justice (MoJ) consultation found serious injury claimants take more risks with investment than the law assumes. The rate is used to predict investment return in order to calculate how much compensation is awarded to serious injury victims. It was reduced from 2.5% to -0.75% in February this year by the previous Lord Chancellor, Liz Truss. Many claimant lawyers welcomed the move at the time, although critics warned it would cost the NHS substantially more in payouts. Full story - New Law Journal

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since then, and nearly a third of the population has been displaced.

The move is a victory for insurers, which could potentially reduce compensation for accident victims. Mohammad Khan, insurance expert with the accountancy and business services firm PwC explains.


Focus of the day story: Changes to the way compensation payouts are calculated have been unveiled today by the Lord Chancellor following a pledge made by ministers to consult on whether there was a fairer way to set the discount rate in future. In February, the then Lord Chancellor, Liz Truss, reduced the discount rate from 2.5 per cent to -0.75 per cent amid fears of a judicial review brought by claimant lawyers.
