FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Bar Standards Board (BSB), which predicted at one point last year that it would authorise 400 firms in 2015, has approved only 32 in its first four months as an entity regulator, it has emerged. Meanwhile, the planned launch date of 1 June 2016 for the licensing of alternative business structures may now be in doubt. In papers for last month’s board meeting, the regulator said that “due to Ministry of Justice consultation periods, this may not be achievable”, before adding: “Timeframes for implementation are currently under review.” Full story - Legal Futures

Life is rosy at the commercial bar, if last year’s financial results provided by some leading sets are anything to go by. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of women judges in both courts and tribunals has increased marginally by less than one per cent, according to the 2015 Judicial Diversity Statistics. Currently, 43.8% of tribunal judges and 25.2% of court judges are women. Overall, women account for eight out of 38 Court of Appeal judges, and 21 out of 106 High Court judges. The percentage of black and minority ethnic (BME) judges across courts and tribunals is unchanged at seven per cent. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Accountants will soon be competing directly with solicitor firms ‘on every high street in the country’, according to a leading financial adviser to the legal sector. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Voluntary code allows firms to compete for candidates on a level playing field, says Jonathan Smithers.
