FOCUS OF THE DAY: Is the Bar a profession in decline? A recent Bar Council report entitled Snapshot about women barristers’ experience today led to lurid headlines. “Shocking levels of rampant sexism,” screamed The Independent, while The Times claimed, “sexist comments were rife.” These claims were a complete distortion, as anyone who bothered to read the report would have spotted immediately. They do not represent current experiences at all; rather, they are anecdotes from a few individuals about the distant past. Full story - The Lawyer

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of barristers who have been authorised to conduct litigation is gradually increasing although this is still lower than expected, the Bar Standards Board has said in its annual report. Since the BSB first permitted barristers to conduct litigation in January 2014, 214 barristers have been authorised. By November last year, the figure was 129. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Bar Standards Board (BSB), which predicted at one point last year that it would authorise 400 firms in 2015, has approved only 32 in its first four months as an entity regulator, it has emerged. Meanwhile, the planned launch date of 1 June 2016 for the licensing of alternative business structures may now be in doubt. In papers for last month’s board meeting, the regulator said that “due to Ministry of Justice consultation periods, this may not be achievable”, before adding: “Timeframes for implementation are currently under review.” Full story - Legal Futures
