FOCUS OF THE DAY: Company directors who save on tax by accepting a modest salary and remuneration by dividend could be in for a nasty shock if they ever come to claim compensation. A company director had his compensation capped to £9,254 annual earnings with dividend income entirely excluded from consideration, in a landmark decision at Manchester Employment Tribunal. If the income from the dividend had been included, he would have been awarded £74,000 in compensation. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Justice agencies are failing to treat victims who raise complaints over their treatment with empathy or patience, leaving victims feeling ignored, a new report has revealed. After consulting more than 200 victims on the complaints procedure, the Victims' Commissioner found that three-quarters of respondents said they were unhappy with the response received and half said the complaints process was difficult to use. The review also found that there was 'inadequate attention to the personal touch victims needed.' Full story - Solicitors Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Law Society has urged the Solicitors Regulation Authority not to give up regulating solicitor insolvency practitioners. Chancery Lane said giving practitioners the option of being regulated by another body could create additional costs and burdens for all involved. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Fewer than half of managing partners at the top 200 law firms think that recent mergers in the market have been successes, new research has found – even though most expect major consolidation in the next two years. The research – which surveyed 102 of the top 200 firms – said that only 43% of those who had undergone a merger in the last five years considered the majority of law firm tie-ups had been a success; 21% said they had not, while the rest declined to answer.
