FOCUS OF THE DAY: Legal chiefs and academics today demanded new laws to stop police and security services from spying on meetings between lawyers and their clients. In a declaration to mark European Lawyers Day, the Law Society, the Bar Council and the Faculty of Advocates argue that codes to protect legal professional privilege from state surveillance and acquisition of communications data are weak and ineffectual. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Tax man gives solicitors three months to come clean on undeclared income. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has opened up a three-month window for solicitors to own up to income they have not declared, or face tougher penalties if they are caught dodging tax. The ‘Solicitors’ Tax Campaign’ is the latest of what HMRC described as a “voluntary, intelligence-led disclosure opportunity” that has to date raised nearly £1bn from targeting a host of other sectors, from doctors to plumbers. FOCUS OF THE DAY: HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched a new campaign to target solicitors’ unpaid taxes, through which lawyers can choose to bring their tax affairs up to date or face tougher penalties in 2015. Through HMRC’s ‘Solicitors’ Tax Campaign’, lawyers will be able to take part in the campaign by signing up before 9 March 2015, and make a payment with a reduced fine until the 9 June 2015. According to LAPG, these providers have traditionally found it difficult to focus on management due to a lack of time, resources and management expertise.
