FOCUS OF THE DAY: Government plans to let HMRC recover unpaid tax and tax credits directly from debtor’s bank accounts have been slated by City lawyers. HMRC’s consultation on new direct recovery powers, Direct Recovery of Debts, closed this week. Accounts would be raided where the debtor owed at least £1,000 and HMRC would leave a minimum of £5,000 in the account. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: No new laws are needed to deal with crimes committed using social media, according to peers. The ‘tentative’ conclusion of the House of Lords communications committee, set up in June, is that the criminal law, almost entirely enacted before the invention of Twitter and Facebook, is ‘generally appropriate’ for the prosecution of offences committed using social media. . FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Master of the Rolls, Lord Dyson, has approved a change to guideline hourly rates (GHRs) to allow chartered legal executives to recover costs at the same level as solicitors once they reach eight years' post-qualification experience in litigation (known as Grade A rates). The change will come into effect on 1 October. The Costs Committee of the Civil Justice Council, chaired by Mr Justice Foskett and reporting to the Master of the Rolls, recommended that chartered legal executives with equivalent experience should be afforded the same recognition in the guidelines.
