Focus of the Day Article: T and B v Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority and another [2021] UKSC 27 - On appeal from [2018] EWCA Civ 1534: The claimants in the case were victims of human trafficking with unspent convictions in Lithuania. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) provides compensation to victims of crime, apart from where they have unspent criminal convictions (“the exclusionary rule”). The question for the Supreme Court was whether the exclusionary rule breached the claimants’ rights under Articles 4 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights.  Today's Highlighted Video Story: Raheel Butt is building The Compound street gym in Newham, east London, an area he calls a “war zone”. After a number of young people lost their lives in the borough, which has been badly affected by postcode gang wars, he’s giving out free memberships to those caught up in serious violence. He has big plans for the gym to be a safe space where young people can rehabilitate and focus on improving their physical and mental health. The Guardian follows Raheel as he mentors the next generation and works with activists from around London to reduce the number of knives on the capital’s streets.

The Court of Appeal has refused to grant a defunct law firm security for costs in a ‘mysterious’ case where there was a ‘complete lack of explanation on both sides as to what was really going on’. Axiom Stone London Ltd (ASLL) – which formerly ran a solicitors' practice under the trading name Quality Solicitors Axiom Stone – is being sued by Heathfield International LLC. The claimant argues it is owed money by the now dormant law firm after providing medical reports for use in litigation.
