Today's Video Focus:  Dublin man Joe Smith went to St James’s Hospital on Easter Monday having experienced kidney pain at home. During his stay he tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted to the hospital’s Covid Intensive Care Unit. In this video we follow his story.

Focus of the Day Article: The Law Society has called on the government to help nurture developments in legal technology as part of its initiative to get the economy on its feet again following the pandemic. Today's Video Focus:  China has passed a law aimed at preventing a repeat of last year's pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. There has been strong international condemnation of the hastily-passed legal crackdown, which is already leading to anti-Beijing groups disbanding.

Focus of the Day Article: The Law Society has called on the government to allow firms to use the apprenticeship levy more flexibly than now to create new jobs and retrain staff as part of the support needed in the wake of Covid-19. It also urged tax incentives to encourage solicitors’ investment in technology as well as continuing wider financial support, such as a temporary cut in VAT. The new campaign, dubbed ‘Return, Restart and Recovery’, said allowing firms to spend the apprenticeship levy on a wider range of support would allow them “to create the new jobs that will provide the backbone of the sector in the long term”. Today's Video Focus:  The government has said it may fine parents in England who refuse to send their children back to school by September. The suggestion was made by the Education Secretary Gavin Williamson, who said he wanted all age groups to return to classrooms in the autumn. Teaching unions have said that threatening parents is the wrong approach and that people who were concerned about their children’s safety needed reassurance.

Focus of the Day Article: Family court judges given power to intervene in domestic abuse cases. Pilot scheme, recommended by expert panel report, will aim to avoid re-traumatising victims and their children. Full story - Guardian Law
