Growing concern that the UK could exit the EU without a deal has led the Law Society of England and Wales to publish the first in a series of papers giving solicitors guidance so they can take steps to mitigate some of the risks. The first tranche of papers gives advice on some of the potential rule changes where a deal goes wrong between a business here and in the EU, what happens in family law if a couple splits up and how data sharing should be approached if the UK quits the EU without any agreement. There is also a paper on legal services.

he High Court has agreed that a former junior lawyer who claimed to be scared to come clean to her bosses about her misconduct should be struck off, after the SRA successfully argued had been treated too leniently at tribunal. Judges in Solicitors Regulation Authority v James & Ors today ruled that the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal was wrong to opt against a strike-off and instead to impose a suspended suspension. The judgment comes less than two weeks after the two-day appeal hearing.

The pilot will apply to applications heard at the Manchester or Birmingham Civil Justice Centres under changes introduced in the 101st update to the Civil Procedure Rules as Practice Direction 51V.

Today's Video Focus: Northern Territory Police were called to respond to a major disturbance at Darwin's Don Dale youth detention centre on Tuesday night where a fire later broke out. The facility was surrounded by emergency crews, including ambulance officers and firefighters who were called out to the incident just before 7:00pm. A Northern Territory Hazardous Chemicals vehicle also attended the scene. A number of detainees were seen on the roof earlier in the evening, with what appeared to be smoke visible at the entry of the centre. By 10:00pm two buildings appeared to be ablaze. Just after midnight, multiple detainees were seen being escorted from the facility in police vehicles.


Focus of the Day Article:
The only female Afghan-born barrister practising in England and Wales revealed yesterday that she had been asked by a solicitor to return her brief because the client wanted “a white male barrister”.
Lawyers on Twitter exploded with anger after Rehana Popal of 10 King’s Bench Walk tweeted what had happened.
