Although not legally binding, the proposal sparked outrage in Pakistan. Campaigners say that at a time when violence against women is rampant in Pakistani society this so-called women's protection bill encourages men to abuse their wives. Shaimaa Khalil spoke to the head of the council, to ask him why he had made such a proposal.

FOCUS OF THE DAY: claims management company has been banned from repeating an advertisement accusing solicitors of overcharging by 20%. The regional press ad was run on behalf of Recovery Ltd, trading as recoveryourovercharges.com. It highlighted the ‘top 5 ways your solicitor rips you off’ and said it could help people to get back the sums overcharged.
