Focus of the Day story: An online court (OC) should be introduced slowly and modestly rather than as a ‘big bang’, according to one of the original architects of the dispute resolution model on which Lord Justice Briggs drew when devising his Civil Court Structure Review. Giving the Society for Computers and Law (SCL) 25th anniversary annual lecture, Professor Richard Susskind, who headed a Civil Justice Council advisory group which in February 2015 produced a report calling for state-backed online dispute resolution, called for the OC to be “piloted and researched” and for its backers to “show restraint”. Focus of the Day story: The top 100 UK law firms achieved modest growth in 2016 but anticipate challenging market conditions ahead, according to PwC’s 25th annual Law Firms Survey. Today's video story: A post office worker foiled a knife-wielding robber in Cardiff by lashing out with a baseball bat. Paula Hooper, 52, struck the masked man on the arm when he demanded money from the till at Ely post office at about 08:30 BST on Tuesday. CCTV footage then shows her chasing the man out of the shop from behind the counter. Ms Hooper said she thought the incident was a "Halloween joke" at first. Postmaster Shady Taha, who was in his office at the time of the incident, described her as the "hero of the day".
