FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Ministry of Justice introduced legal aid reforms without taking account of the potential consequences and continues to show little interest in their knock-on effects, MPs said today. The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee said the MoJ is still playing ‘catch up’ almost two years after reducing the scope of civil legal aid, with ‘considerable gaps’ in its understanding. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has upheld the right of UK courts to impose whole-life prison sentences on those who are jailed for life. Over-ruling its decision in 2013, the Strasbourg court ruled six to one that the justice secretary has the power to release those serving whole life term in exceptional circumstances, which meant such a sentence complies with article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Company directors who save on tax by accepting a modest salary and remuneration by dividend could be in for a nasty shock if they ever come to claim compensation. A company director had his compensation capped to £9,254 annual earnings with dividend income entirely excluded from consideration, in a landmark decision at Manchester Employment Tribunal. If the income from the dividend had been included, he would have been awarded £74,000 in compensation. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Justice agencies are failing to treat victims who raise complaints over their treatment with empathy or patience, leaving victims feeling ignored, a new report has revealed. After consulting more than 200 victims on the complaints procedure, the Victims' Commissioner found that three-quarters of respondents said they were unhappy with the response received and half said the complaints process was difficult to use. The review also found that there was 'inadequate attention to the personal touch victims needed.' Full story - Solicitors Journal
