Focus of the day story:  Parliament should avoid ’dangerous ambiguity’ in the legal system by formally instructing courts to take account of European Court of Justice (CJEU) decisions when they are relevant post Brexit, a thinktank has warned in the run-up to the Repeal Bill.  In Brexit and the European Court of Justice the Institute for Government says that ministers have left fundamental questions unanswered on the status of CJEU decisions after the UK leaves the European Union. While the government has said pre-Brexit decisions of the European Court will be incorporated into UK law, it has not said how British judges should treat future rulings. Today's video story: Nicola Sturgeon has said she is to "reset" her plans for a second referendum on Scottish independence. The first minister had called for an independence referendum to be held in the autumn of next year or the spring of 2019. But she has been considering her options since the SNP lost 21 seats in the election earlier this month. Ms Sturgeon told Holyrood she not "immediately" seek to introduce legislation for a referendum.

Focus of the day story:  Legal aid cuts have left residents no way to challenge sub-standard housing. The Grenfell Tower action group had no access to legal aid. Residents at risk in their homes want straightforward, enforceable legal remedies to keep them safe. Full story: Guardian Law

Focus of the day story: The practising certificate (PC) fee for solicitors is set to fall 4% this year, but the saving will be largely wiped out by an increase in contributions to bolster the Solicitors Compensation Fund ahead of an expected rise in claims arising from their involvement in fraudulent investment schemes. The Law Society issued a consultation on Friday that laid out a proposed budget of £134.1m for 2017/18 to run both the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Law Society’s representative function, compared to £137m for the present year.. Focus of the day story: The legal profession has turned in a respectable performance in the UK’s first-ever Social Mobility Employer Index. The Top 50 employers included a remarkable 16 national and international law firms. The Index ranks employers on the actions they are taking to improve social mobility, and to recruit and progress talented employees from all backgrounds.
