Focus of the Day Legal Article: Just 18% of claimant personal injury solicitors say their firm has settled on a strategy to deal with next April’s whiplash reforms, a survey has found. Of the 1,241 responses to a Twitter poll by First4Lawyers, 37% said their firms have not decided on their strategy, while 28% admitted that they have not even thought about it yet. One in six (17%) said they were “getting there”. Full story - Legal Futures

Today's Highlighted Video Story: Faced with a lack of prosecution of those accused of crimes against humanity committed during Argentina’s military dictatorship, family members and descendants of the country’s estimated 30,000 disappeared took action. In the mid-1990s, they began gathering outside of accused perpetrators’ homes and workplaces to publicly shame them and raise awareness about the government’s systematic and brutal targeting of its people — and how it had gone unpunished. The human rights group HIJOS (Sons and Daughters for Identity and Justice Against Forgetfulness and Silence) led and labeled this direct-action style of protest “escrache,” or exposure.

Focus of the Day Legal Article: New legislation which would increase the penalties for dog-owners whose pets chase, attack or kill farmed animals will require significant amendment and clear guidance as to how it will work in practice if it is to meet its aim of reducing incidents of so-called “livestock worrying”, according to MSPs. Today's Highlighted Video Story: Hundreds of thousands of people from ethnic minorities, including the Uighur community, are being forced by the Chinese authorities to pick cotton, in the far western region of Xinjiang, according to information seen by the BBC. The evidence suggests that China's cotton crop - a fifth of the world’s supply - could be far more dependent on forced labour than previously thought. Over the past few years more than a million Uighurs are believed to have been detained in so-called ‘re-education' camps. China denies claims of torture and carrying out forced sterilisations and abortions. In response to the latest evidence the Chinese government has told the BBC that claims of forced labour are “entirely fabricated”.

Today's Highlighted Video Story: Since June, 18,000 Yazidis have returned home to Sinjar, a significant increase in the rate of return compared to previous months. More than 300,000 Yezidis fled Sinjar when ISIL (ISIS) took over vast swaths of northern Iraq, committing a genocide against the minority and taking thousands of women into slavery. Although those returning hope to rebuild their region, many feel they have been excluded from important decisions about the area's governance.

Today's Highlighted Video Story:  In India, as the farmer-government negotiation hit a deadlock, the agitation intensified against the corporates. The farmers threatened to block theDelhi-Jaipur Highway on Saturday, December 12. The BJP commissioned a media blitz to tackle the stalemate with farmers protesting the new agricultural laws. The central government on Friday began pushing a narrative that the "ultra-left" has hijacked the demonstrations. Through unofficial channels of communication referred to as "government sources", functionaries in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration drew a parallel between the farmers' agitation and the Bhima-Koregaon violence near Pune in 2018. Farmers' groups have rubbished the claims as "propaganda".
