Focus of the Day story:
The Ministry of Justice has spent more than half its allocated budget for court modernisation, the department confirmed today. An update provided for the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee stated that by the end of 2018/19 the government will have spent £546m, achieving with benefits so far worth £158m. The entire programme is expected to cost around £1bn, but the committee stated its concern last year that elements of it still required backing from the Treasury.

Today's Video Focus: For years, critics of the government's counter-terrorism strategy, the Prevent programme, have claimed it stigmatises the Muslim community. But last year, the number of people referred to Prevent over concerns about far-right extremism rose by more than a third. This programme has been given exclusive access to the first Prevent group aimed at a group of mothers from predominantly white areas of Bradford. Channel 4 News has been speaking to them about why an increasing number of young, white people are vulnerable to radicalisation.

Solicitors at smaller firms believe that clients’ focus on price is compromising their work and even their ability to uphold the law, a survey has suggested. LexisNexis’s latest Bellwether research said the profession has a “perplexing blindspot” when it came to understanding the important of price for clients that indicated a wider “disconnect” between solicitors and clients.

Today's Video Focus: India Union minister Piyush Goyal presented the election year Interim Budget in parliament today and announced major relief for farmers and individual taxpayers. With the Lok Sabha election just months away, the government kept the budget focussed on immediate relief such as easing income tax rules, favourable loan terms for small businesses, farm loan waiver and even direct cash transfers to small farmers. The government said it will send Rs 6,000 to small farmers directly into their bank accounts in a scheme that will be funded 100 per cent by the centre. The programme will cost Rs 75,000 crore.

The handler of legal complaints in England and Wales is showing tentative signs of improved performance. Data on timeliness, published this week by the Legal Ombudsman, show the organisation steadily improved through the second half of 2018. By December, 45% of all legal cases concluded within 90 days, with 62% concluding within 180 days and 91% within a year. Back in April, just 11% of cases were finished within 90 days – well below the ombudsman’s own target of 26%. The ombudsman still falls short of its target to complete 72% of cases within 180 days, but has improved since April when the proportion was just 46%.

The SDT said the fact that Emily Scott, who left Quality Solicitors De Vita Platt immediately after completing her training contract, had been “under pressure and working in a horrendous environment” could not excuse her dishonesty.
