Focus of the day story: About £10.3m was paid out from the Compensation Fund last year to clients of solicitors who misappropriated their money or otherwise behaved badly. The Compensation Fund, which is run by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) on a discretionary basis, pays grants to members of the public, charities and small businesses that have suffered hardship through the wrongful actions of their solicitors, for example, when solicitors steal or misappropriate client money. Today's video story: Llyr grew up in Wales as a farmer's son in a close knit community and is transgender. Aged 16, Llyr is one of 75 children and young adults to have been referred in 2016 to a specialist NHS clinic as a result of transgender feelings. We spoke to Llyr's parents and asked them how they dealt with this transitioning process.


Focus of the day story: The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is anticipating a bump in claims on its compensation fund as a result of solicitors becoming involved in dodgy high-yield investment schemes, it emerged yesterday. It came as the value of open claims on the fund – which compensates clients for losses suffered due to their solicitor’s dishonesty and default – rose to £42m in 2016. Full story - Legal Futures

Today's video story: Two years of war in Yemen have created what the UN has described as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. As well as impending famine, the country is also facing an unprecedented outbreak of cholera. In the past month 52,000 cases of suspected cholera have been reported. The World Health Organisation believes more than 400 people have died in the past month.


Focus of the day story: The Court of Appeal has delivered some good news for victims of ‘hit and run’ drivers, in a significant decision that will allow claimants to pursue unnamed drivers in a civil action. Ruling in Cameron v Hussain and another [2017] EWCA Civ 366 this week, Lady Justice Gloster and Lord Justice Lloyd Jones (Sir Ross Cranston dissenting) allowed a claimant injured by an unidentified hit and run driver of a vehicle that was traced and covered by insurance to recover from the vehicle's insurers. They did this by citing the untraced driver as a party described by reference to the car he was driving and the accident details. Full story - New Law Journal
