FOCUS OF THE DAY: Two-thirds of students who pass the £12,500-plus Bar Professional Training Course fail to secure a pupillage, according to new statistics that once again call into question the credibility of the bar’s training regime. Nearly half of pupillages are awarded to women, but the bar regulator says that since more women than men enrol on the BPTC, ‘more work may be required’ to tackle gender bias. White BPTC candidates may also be more successful in securing pupillage than BME candidates, it adds, though ‘more research is needed’. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has revealed a performance update on the next generation of barristers, based on data collected during the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). Of 4,760 BPTC students between 2012 and 2014, 72% passed the course first time, and 11% of all graduates achieved the highest grade, “Outstanding”. More than a third of UK/EU domiciled graduates enrolled in 2011-2013 have since gained pupillage. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Law firms have just six months to go until the new continuing professional development (CPD) rules come in, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has warned. All solicitors must move to the new approach on 1 November 2016. From that date, they will not need to count their CPD hours or do particular types of training.
