Focus of the Day Legal Article: Scots criminal lawyers who want to address the concerns of their profession have formed a group to promote the interests of new and aspiring practitioners. New Generation Lawyers (NGL) will be campaigning for a sustainable legal aid system, encouraging diversity within the criminal bar and providing a network for lawyers beginning their career in criminal law. Today's Highlighted Video Story: The Prime Minister has imposed a new coronavirus alert system on England to try to stop the virus spiralling out of control. The 3 Tier system is replacing local lockdowns. Liverpool City Region is the first to be placed under the highest Tier 3 measures, which means the area is “at very high risk”. It means no mixing of households. Pubs and bars will be closed unless they serve what's being called a “substantial meal”. Most of the rest of England will be under Tier 1 restrictions - with medium levels of risk. In these areas current national rules continue, with the Rule of Six and a 10pm curfew for pubs, bars and restaurants.

Focus of the Day Legal Article: The Bar Council has published three guides on race inequality at the Bar, as the legal profession marks Black History Month. The guides, produced by the Bar’s Race Working Group, explain the key challenges regarding pupillage, bullying and general culture, and include a framework for chambers to adopt. Today's Highlighted Video Story: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad today arrested an employee of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for allegedly supplying secret information of fighter aircraft to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency. "The Nashik unit of the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) received reliable intelligence about the man, who was in constant touch with ISI. The man, identified as Deepak Shirsath, was supplying confidential information about Indian fighter aircraft and their manufacturing unit to the Pakistani spy agency through WhatsApp and social media," DCP Vinay Rathod said.

Focus of the Day Law Article:  The Bar Council has urged all Government Legal Department barristers to respond to a call for evidence around judicial review, saying it is important to provide a ‘broad range of perspectives from as many parts of government as possible’. The Independent Review of Administrative Law is seeking feedback from government departments over whether judicial review strikes the right balance between enabling citizens to challenge the lawfulness of government action and allowing the executive and local authorities to carry on the business of government. Full story - The Law Society Gazette
