Focus of the Day article: Lawyers commissioning medical experts for whiplash claims may have to pay a membership fee to plug a major funding gap in the accreditation body. MedCo, which facilitates the sourcing of medical reports for soft tissue injury, faces a £2.2m loss this year after a dramatic downturn in its income, it revealed last week. In 2016, the year after it was created by the Ministry of Justice, MedCo reported more than £5.8m in turnover from medical reporting organisations paying to be accredited and allocated work in the scheme. Focus of the Day article: Written pupillage agreements will become compulsory from 1 May 2020, the Bar Standards Board (BSB) has said. A related change will make it compulsory for chambers and other training providers to bring their pupillage recruitment timetables into line with the pupillage gateway – from 1 November 2020. However, since the internet was blocked back in August, when the region was stripped of its semi-autonomous status and divided into two federally-administered territories, YouTubers like Kashmiri Kalkharabs have been effectively silenced.

Focus of the Day article: Progress on judicial diversity has been slow, according to a JUSTICE working party report published this month. The report, ‘Increasing judicial diversity: an update’, builds on its 2017 report of the same name, which explored the structural barriers faced by women, Black and minority ethnic lawyers, solicitors and those from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds, in reaching the bench.
