Tougher legal safeguards could be introduced to give workers greater protection from abuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). The government is proposing to clarify that NDAs cannot prevent a worker disclosing criminal conduct to the police; ensure workers receive a clear, written description of rights before signing; and requiring that workers receive independent advice before signing a settlement agreement.

In response to the Legal Services Board’s (LSB) draft business plan 2019/20, the Law Society’s Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) said the the absence of an ‘appeal or oversight mechanism’ in the act to challenge the LSB’s approval of applications should be addressed.

The clock on a possible ban on referral fees from lawyers to estate agents has started running after new guidance on disclosure was published by National Trading Standards (NTS). Failing to disclose referral arrangements risks criminal prosecution, estate agents are told in the guidance, which the government has said will be given a year to see if it is effective.

Today's Video Focus: In northern Russia, seven men have come forward to claim they were tortured by police because of their religious views. The men are all Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their organisation was banned by Russia’s Supreme Court in 2017 as extremist and dozens of Jehovah’s Witnesses have since been detained across the country. Officials in Surgut initially denied the reports of torture, but now say they will investigate. President Vladimir Putin has called the prosecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses ‘utter nonsense’ and asked the Supreme Court for clarification on how the law is applied.
