Today's Video Focus Story: What’s the Romani word for “feminism”? The answer is “Giuvlepin” – a Romanian theatre company showcasing “some of the most widespread stereotypes about Roma women across the world”. Formed by a group of Roma actresses in 2014, the troupe’s performance explores and busts stereotypes about Roma women and culture, challenging perceptions held both within and outside the community. The theatre company’s founders invented the term “Giuvlepin” because there was no previous Romani word for feminism.


Focus of the Day Story: A landmark case has opened in the Supreme Court that will finally decide whether insurers can bypass solicitors and settle claims directly with injured people. The outcome could either cost insurers millions in extra payments to solicitors or potentially threaten hundreds of firms that depend on personal injury work. Haven Insurance is appealing to the court to overturn a Court of Appeal ruling handing north-west firm Gavin Edmondson Solicitors around £12,500 in costs. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

Today's Video Focus Story: Why is Israel kicking out thousands of African refugees? They endured a dangerous and desperate journey to escape war, persecution and hunger in their countries. The refugees, mainly from Eritrea and Sudan, travelled through Egypt seeking a better life in Israel. But the government calls them infiltrators and says they threaten what it calls Israel's "Jewish character". It has begun issuing deportation orders, and warning the refugees they either accept money and a plane ticket home, or risk being jailed. But is this action legal?

Focus of the Day Story: The Law Society has confirmed it is seeking permission to intervene in the case of Dreamvar (UK) Ltd v Mishcon de Reya (a firm). In 2017, the High Court ruled that Mishcon de Reya should be responsible for the costs of a client who bought a property from an individual who was posing as the owner. The court found the firm was liable for breach of trust. The Law Society president said the body was intervening due to the potentially substantial implications for property solicitors. Today's Video Focus Story:  While Australia says ‘yes’, the country with more gay people than most says an implacable ‘no’. But in China, a determined group of young men and women just won’t take no for an answer.


Focus of the Day story: A charity helping lawyers with mental health problems has reported an 11% increase in call volumes in 2017. LawCare dealt with nearly 900 calls in total last year, from 616 callers. Half of the solicitors and barristers who sought help cited depression or workplace stress. Other issues included disciplinary concerns (8%), anxiety (7%), bereavement (7%) financial problems (4%) and bullying and harassment (4%). Issues which made up the remaining 33% included chronic illness, alcohol and drugs, career development problems and relationship issues. The majority of callers to the helpline were women (65%); 45% were trainees or had been qualified five years or fewer. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

Today's Video Focus Story:  The Irish government has agreed to hold a referendum at the end of May on whether to reform the country’s near-total ban on abortion. Helen Linehan and her husband, the writer Graham Linehan, campaigned to change the law in Ireland after she had an abortion because of a fatal abnormality in the foetus. Cliona Johnson was also told during pregnancy her baby had a fatal abnormality. He lived for 17 minutes after birth and she now campaigns to keep the law as it is.


Focus of the Day story: A Brexit deal that mirrors the free trade agreement (FTA) Canada has with the EU would be equivalent to a ‘no deal’ outcome for legal services, the Law Society warned today. It would also exclude issues such as co-operation in civil and criminal justice matters, mutual legal assistance or recognition and enforcement of judgments, or data protection.
