Today's video story:  Following the Donald Trump Jr. email scandal, claims of alleged Trump-Russia collusion are topping the news agenda yet again. So much so, that one of the president's advisers, Kellyanne Conway, decided to spell it out plain and simple to Americans.


Focus of the day story: There is a “clear perception” among most family law clients that barristers are more expensive than solicitors and other legal services providers, major research commissioned by the Bar Standards Board has found. The poll of 1,200 people who had used a family lawyer in the past two years also showed little take-up of public access – only 13% used a barrister at all, and just 12% of these contacted the barrister directly – but indicated a growing willingness to consider it in future. Today's video story:  Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have been crossing into neighbouring Colombia every day in search of basic food items and medicine. As Venezuela's economic crisis deepens, these items are becoming increasingly hard to find. Some people are selling subsidised Venezuelan products at a profit just to put food on their tables.



Focus of the day story: A call for fresh legislation on employment status has been generally welcomed - though solicitors have warned that Brexit and the government’s reduced majority in parliament could get in the way of a ‘gargantuan’ task. In his review into modern employment practices published today, political strategist Matthew Taylor recommends that the government take a ‘fresh look’ at legislation to help citizens understand what employment status applies to them what rights they are entitled to. Today's video story:  A self-confessed IRA bomb maker who has said he was part of the group responsible for the Birmingham pub bombings has issued an apology. Twenty-one people were killed on 21 November 1974 when bombs exploded in two city centre pubs. Six innocent men were wrongfully convicted. No-one has ever been brought to justice for one of the worst single losses of life in the Troubles. Michael Christopher Hayes said he was sorry innocent people were killed. The 69-year-old, who now lives in south Dublin, refused to say who planted the bombs in the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town, but said he was speaking out to give "the point of view of a participant".

Focus of the day story: The Law Society has published a devastating critique of LASPO (Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012), which slashed civil and family legal aid. In a report published last week, ‘Access denied? LASPO four years on’, the Law Society concludes that the legislation, which came into force in April 2013, has denied access to justice to society’s most vulnerable, hit the public purse and damaged the foundation of the justice system.
