FOCUS OF THE DAY:  There is a “real risk” that members of the public will view the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) as “simply preferring the word of solicitors”, its independent review body has concluded. The Independent Complaint Resolution Service (ICRS) – a body which deals with complaints against the SRA which are not resolved internally – said the regulator should also review its procedure for handling compensation fund claims to “avoid any perception of bias”. The Bill allows the home secretary to support asylum seekers who may become destitute only if they do not face a “genuine obstacle” to leaving the UK. A leading QC has called for legal privilege to be 'firmly in the statute books' amid concerns the prison service self-authorises breaches of professional privilege (LPP). The call for action comes after justice minister Andrew Selous MP told the House of Commons that the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) has the power 'to intercept prisoner's communications in specific circumstances'. Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd also mentions for the first time ‘a note of caution’ following widespread opposition to the government’s new legal aid contracting regime.
