FOCUS OF THE DAY: Court fee increases introduced six months ago failed to deliver any tangible improvements in the courts service or help protect access to justice, the Law Society said today. Responding to a government consultation on the impact of the new fees, it said they would price small businesses out of exercising their legal rights, such as recovering debts. Law Society president Jonathan Smithers said: ‘There has been no assessment of the impact of increases, just six months ago, of more than 600%. Raising the fees further may render ordinary people’s legal rights meaningless because they simply would not be able to afford to enforce them. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The chair of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has said the end is in sight of its “long, long journey” on consumer credit after a last-minute deal with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Enid Rowlands said there had been “a lot of anxiety in the profession” about the issue, but the regulator had avoided the Scottish situation, where an extra 500 pages had been added to the rules. “It could have gone another way,” she told a press briefing after this week’s SRA board meeting. “The FCA could have dug in its heels”. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Legal Ombudsman has launched proposals that would allow it to become an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) entity—and give clients a longer time to lodge complaints. From 1 October 2015, under EU legislation, legal services providers must “signpost” consumers to an ADR entity that is competent to handle their complaint. In order to be compliant with the ADR Regulations, the Legal Ombudsman needs to change its rules, hence the consultation. Full story - New Law Journal
