FOCUS OF THE DAY: Big law backs Justice First Fellowship Scheme which will provide £75,000 to LPC graduates with a passion for helping society's most vulnerable The Legal Education Foundation (TLEF) is to offer seven training contracts designed to produce a new generation of specialist social justice lawyers and increase access to justice for the UK's most vulnerable. The Justice First Fellowship Scheme targets legal practice course (LPC) graduates, with successful applicants undertaking a two-year term as fellows for the duration of their training contracts and receive around £75,000 to cover salary, supervision, and training courses. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Anger is mounting in the profession about the current state of civil litigation, court fees and costs budgeting, according to the results of the latest NLJ /LSLA litigation trends survey. Court fees, which have risen by more than 600% in some cases, are a major irritation for litigation lawyers, with 90% of respondents stating that they believe the hike will affect clients’ decisions to commence proceedings. David Greene, NLJ consultant editor and senior partner at Edwin Coe, says: “The Ritz is probably cheaper now than the Central London County Court but at least the Ritz does not run a monopoly.” Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of barristers who have been authorised to conduct litigation is gradually increasing although this is still lower than expected, the Bar Standards Board has said in its annual report. Since the BSB first permitted barristers to conduct litigation in January 2014, 214 barristers have been authorised. By November last year, the figure was 129. The board noted that the Bar Council is continuing to promote the new litigation rules amongst the profession. Full story - The Law Society Gazette
