Focus of the Day article: Law firms assume – wrongly – that their professional indemnity insurance covers them if they are investigated or prosecuted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), research has warned. As a result, a minority of firms surveyed have directors and officers’ (D&O) insurance – also known as management liability insurance – to cover the costs of regulatory action. Today's Video Focus:  Iran has admitted "unintentionally" shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board. An investigation found that "missiles fired due to human error", President Hassan Rouhani said. He described the crash as an "unforgivable mistake". The military said the jet turned towards a sensitive site belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and was then mistaken for a cruise missile. Iran had previously rejected suggestions that it was to blame.

The law, which promises citizenship to only non-Muslim refugees who came to India before 2014 from three neighbouring countries, has triggered massive protests across the country.

All 176 people on board the Ukrainian International Airline flight were killed when it crashed just outside Tehran. Today's Video Focus:  A student from Indonesia has been identified as Britain's most prolific rapist after being convicted of more than 150 offences, including 136 rapes. In four separate trials, Reynhard Sinaga, 36, was found guilty of assaulting 48 men whom he drugged after taking them back to his apartment from outside bars and clubs in the city of Manchester. 


Focus of the Day article: Detainees at police stations reportedly had to wait hours to see a solicitor on New Year's Day, after the Legal Aid Agency's call centre system went down. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, detainees are entitled to free and independent advice at any time while in police detention. Solicitors are deployed through the Defence Solicitor Call Centre. However, police reportedly had to call solicitors directly on New Year's Day after the website went down at midnight for nearly five hours. Full story - The Law Society Gazette
