The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is to explore whether to use its power to cap the fees charged by personal injury claims management companies (CMCs), it has emerged. It has also been urged to co-ordinate with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) if it decides to take action. The Financial Guidance and Claims Act 2018 gave the FCA a duty to make rules restricting charges for claims management activities in relation to financial services and financial products claims.

To the relief of the residents, the troops weren’t there to invade them. As it turned out, the soldiers had mistaken the coordinates and advanced through the fields by accident. Still, this mistake had its consequences: according to locals, the tanks destroyed nearly 600 hectares of crops in their path.

The magistracy is in ‘near crisis’, MPs have warned, with a shortfall in numbers that is ‘as frustrating as it was foreseeable’. The Justice Committee this week called for a national strategy to recruit and train more magistrates, including extra funds for training, in its report, ‘The role of the magistracy―follow-up’. It said magistrates are struggling with reduced support and feel undervalued, while the court closure programme has created additional challenges.

Today's Video Focus: A fresh bill to outlaw the Muslim practice of a man divorcing his wife instantly by uttering "talaq" thrice, which got stalled in the upper house of parliament and lapsed, was introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The government countered the opposition's charge that it was a "discriminatory" bill by pointing out that the Supreme Court's order banning the controversial Islamic practice needs to be followed up with a strong law. "...There have been triple talaq since 2017 even after the judgement. What should the women do? Hang the judgement on the wall?" Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said after introducing the bill in the Lok Sabha. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 will replace an ordinance issued in February by the previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government. The bill had failed to clear the Rajya Sabha test earlier.

Mr Cooper was a police officer for 20 years, first in NSW and then Queensland. He loved the job but also witnessed terrible things that haunted him — car accidents, suicides and murders. He was medically retired in 2008, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The struggle with PTSD is all too common.
