FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint over a law firm’s claim that its ‘no win, no fee’ clients would receive all of their damages. However, it emerged after the ASA made its finding that the firm, London practice Lorrells, had closed down. While operating, Lorrells challenged the validity of consumer credit agreements, working under conditional fee agreements to try and write off the debt on behalf of clients. FOCUS OF THE DAY: From October 2015, new rules are making it easier for claimants to bring antitrust claims in the UK. These changes are the final piece of the Government’s wide-ranging reforms to UK competition law, which began in 2010.  The latest reforms comprise four key elements. Until now, claimants have tended to bring private actions before the High Court.  The High Court had wider jurisdiction and allowed cases to be launched sooner.  Under the new regime, the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) will become the principal venue for competition cases.  It now has the power to hear standalone claims as well as follow-on actions.  It can hear collective actions.  It can award injunctive relief.  And cases launched in the High Court can now be transferred to the CAT. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The London Solicitors Litigation Association (LSLA) has issued a robust response to the government’s latest proposal to hike court fees. In March 2015, the fee for issuing a money claim rose dramatically to 5% of the value of a claim worth £10,000 or more, with a cap of £10,000. This sparked fury among many solicitors. In July 2015, however, the government issued a consultation proposing to raise fees even higher. Full story - New Law Journal
