FOCUS OF THE DAY: Small law firms have been saving up to 25% on their indemnity insurance premiums following the arrival of a new insurer from Qatar, broker Lockton has said. The annual renewal date for many law firms passed last week, and Brian Boehmer, partner specialising in professional indemnity at Lockton, estimated that QIC Europe – which was targeting law firms with one to 20 partners – may already have taken a 5% share of the market. McClure Naismith’s decision to call in the administrators in August was the third sad ending of its kind, following Semple Fraser in 2013 and Tods Murray, bought by Shepherd & Wedderburn in 2014. Over the last few years The Lawyer has anatomised the market reasons for the faltering performance of some Scottish firms and their vulnerability to takeover. Many of the problems spin out of the rise of the Scottish banks in the noughties, swollen out of all proportion, which brought fat years to the law firms. FOCUS OF THE DAY: City lawyers have fired off an angry letter to the Lord Chancellor, Michael Gove, about proposals to hike court fees. In a joint letter, the City of London Law Society and Commercial Bar Association warn Gove that he risks driving high-value legal business overseas to New York or Singapore. They argue that the resulting loss in tax revenue will “dwarf” any increase in income from court fees. Full story - New Law Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Any challenges to the government’s awards of new legal aid contracts must be done quickly, anxious criminal defence solicitors were warned last night. Firms will shortly discover via the Legal Aid Agency’s Bravo e-tendering portal whether they have been successful with bids for a reduced number of contracts to provide 24-hour cover at police stations. A spokesperson for the agency told the Gazette that applicant organisations would be notified about the tender outcomes 'this week'. Full story - Law Society Gazette
