FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of barristers who have been authorised to conduct litigation is gradually increasing although this is still lower than expected, the Bar Standards Board has said in its annual report. Since the BSB first permitted barristers to conduct litigation in January 2014, 214 barristers have been authorised. By November last year, the figure was 129. The board noted that the Bar Council is continuing to promote the new litigation rules amongst the profession. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Bar Standards Board (BSB), which predicted at one point last year that it would authorise 400 firms in 2015, has approved only 32 in its first four months as an entity regulator, it has emerged. Meanwhile, the planned launch date of 1 June 2016 for the licensing of alternative business structures may now be in doubt. In papers for last month’s board meeting, the regulator said that “due to Ministry of Justice consultation periods, this may not be achievable”, before adding: “Timeframes for implementation are currently under review.” Full story - Legal Futures

FOCUS OF THE DAY: While much of the commercial bar is in growth mode despite a challenging market, it is the smaller sets where most activity is happening. Big shots beware. Life is rosy at the commercial bar, if last year’s financial results provided by some leading sets are anything to go by. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of women judges in both courts and tribunals has increased marginally by less than one per cent, according to the 2015 Judicial Diversity Statistics. Currently, 43.8% of tribunal judges and 25.2% of court judges are women. Overall, women account for eight out of 38 Court of Appeal judges, and 21 out of 106 High Court judges. The percentage of black and minority ethnic (BME) judges across courts and tribunals is unchanged at seven per cent. Full story - New Law Journal
