FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Legal Aid Agency has set new deadlines for crime duty tender contracts following this morning’s Court of Appeal decision to dismiss a challenge by the Law Society and practitioner groups. An injunction suspending the tender process expires today after the court refused to extend it until Monday while the Law Society seeks to take its case to the Supreme Court. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Safeguards proposed by the government to protect legal professional privilege (LPP) from sweeping state surveillance powers are inadequate and lawyers’ communications should be explicitly protected by legislation, the Law Society has urged. Responding to a Home Office consultation on two draft codes of practice pursuant to section 71 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 – which ended last week – Chancery Lane complained that the proposed codes provided little improvement on what it characterised as the “officials making aware and ministers taking care” approach of the current codes. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Bar regulator says it is not in the public interest to exempt QCs from quality assurance. The regulator for the barrister profession has requested that Queen's Counsel Appointments (QCA) consider developing a system of re-accrediting criminal silks. The move follows an announcement in January from the Bar Standards Board (BSB) that it planned to explore other ways to protect the public from poor standards of advocacy. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Proponents of reforms to judicial review claim they will deter ‘frivolous’ cases but the legal profession is worried about the effect on access to justice. A number of reforms to the way judicial reviews can be brought and financed in the UK have caused industry-wide concern over the past two years. Lawyers, ministers and peers have universally denounced the new measures proposed by Lord Chancellor and secretary of state for justice Chris Grayling, claiming they will limit individuals’ access to justice and make it more difficult for people to hold government and public authorities to account. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Small and medium-sized law firms are enjoying “sustained economic improvement” but have room to boost profitability, according to a Natwest/ RBS bellwether report. The annual report, Financial Benchmarking Report, is based on contributions from 339 firms with fee income of up to £35m, using figures from their financial year end in 2014. Profits rose on average by 8%, and median profit per equity partner rose £20,000 on last year’s report to £107,000. Full story - New Law Journal
