Employment tribunals are struggling to cope with a swelling backlog of claims that has risen from 13,360 to 23,700 outstanding cases in one year. The 77% growth has occurred since fees were abolished in July 2017, and comes as tribunals suffer a shortage of staff, judges and resources.

Today's Video Focus: Captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman returned to India late on Friday after nearly 60 hours in Pakistan. Dressed in navy blue blazers, white shirt and grey trousers, the pilot - with a black eye - smile as he crossed into India through the Attari-Wagah border, hours later than expected. Escorted by Pakistan Rangers till the Zero Line that marks the India-Pakistan land border, he was received by Indian security officers and whisked away.

The UK legal services market was valued at £35.1bn in 2018, increasing by 6.3 per cent at current prices on the previous year. When inflation is taken into account then market value increased by 3.7 per cent. The findings come from the 9th annual edition of the UK Legal Services Market Trends Report.

Criminal law barristers cannot go on without “sensible parameters” for sitting hours and overnight working and will take action if the judiciary does not, the head of their representative body said yesterday. Chris Henley, chair of the Criminal Bar Association, said it and the Bar Council have “endeavoured to agree” such parameters with the senior judiciary.
