FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Solicitors Regulation Authority welcome government proposals to make legal services regulators fully separate from representative bodies. SRA chair Enid Rowlands (pictured) told a board meeting in London that modern regulators should be ‘independent and fully accountable’ to the public. Chancellor George Osborne and business secretary Sajid Javid revealed plans earlier this week to consult on the change by spring 2016. In effect the plans would re-draft the Legal Services Act, which created legal services regulators that retained links to representative bodies. Full story - The Law Society Gazette

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Practising solicitors should be allowed to deliver advice to the public from unregulated firms, subject to restrictions, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has suggested as part of a phased review of how it regulates both individuals and organisations. In a pre-consultation paper, the regulator also said plans to introduce third-party escrow accounts for solicitors would feature in a review of the accounts rules next spring. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Costs lawyers could take on low-level judicial functions to help judges with costs, the Association of Costs Lawyers (ACL) has told the Civil Courts Structure Review. The review, led by Lord Justice Briggs, is looking at the entire structure of the civil courts in England and Wales. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Some 200 law firms could fall within the scope of the new apprenticeship levy of 0.5% on company payrolls, preliminary analysis of the new measure suggests. The levy, announced in the spending review yesterday, will be imposed on businesses with wage bills of over £3m a year and be charged from April 2017. The government says the scheme will raise £3bn a year by 2019-20 and fund three million apprenticeships. Full story - The Law Society Gazette
