Today's video story:  Nick Clegg says the "war on drugs is not working", but Peter Hitchens says "there has been no war". The columnist said cannabis has been "effectively a decriminalised drug in the country for many years", and the number of prosecutions has been “dropping like a stone”. But the former deputy prime minister said: “Drugs are bad for you, they cause harm. I am a dad, I don't want my kids hooked on drugs", but he told Mr Hitchens that he could not "just wish it away and somehow think you can prohibit drugs out of existence".

FOCUS OF THE DAY:  The legal profession has until early next decade to prepare for massive technological advances that will reshape the industry, according to a renowned legal futurologist. That was the warning today from Professor Richard Susskind (pictured), speaking at the Law Society’s law management section annual conference. Susskind said artificial intelligence will move forward at such a pace in the coming years that systems will be able to diagnose and respond to clients’ legal problems. Labour MP John Mann has verbally attacked Ken Livingstone as tensions rise over anti-Semitic claims. The former mayor was heading for the BBC Westminster studio when he was confronted by his critic. Mr Livingstone, who faces calls for his own resignation for defending Nah Shah, said: "He went completely over the top." And he told Daily Politics presenter Andrew Neil that previously Mr Mann was "screaming I was a bigot down the phone".

FOCUS OF THE DAY:  Online dispute resolution (ODR) could be the only way of ensuring access to justice in moderate-sized claims in future – but the Bar Council is trying to find an alternative that retains hearings, according to the president of the Supreme Court. Lord Neuberger noted the work being done on ODR by Lord Justice Briggs and the Civil Justice Council working party headed by Professor Richard Susskind, and said that ultimately, an eBay-style system might be the only solution. FOCUS OF THE DAY: A proposal to hike court fees for immigration and asylum cases by as much as 500% has raised hackles in the legal profession. Bar Chairman Chantal-Aimée Doerries QC, accused the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of seeking to “use the courts as a cash cow”. "The outcome is likely to be that the Ministry won't get its money,” she said. She pointed out that, last year, the MoJ introduced a blanket 5% fee on money claims, with up to £10,000 payable upfront. In March, however, the MoJ revealed in evidence to the Justice Select Committee that the predicted fee income had not matched expectations, partly due to “unpredicted volume changes following introduction of enhanced fees in March 2015”.
