FOCUS OF THE DAY: Accountants will soon be competing directly with solicitor firms ‘on every high street in the country’, according to a leading financial adviser to the legal sector. Ian Muirhead, chairman of Solicitors Independent Financial Advice, said he expects 750 accountancy firms – three times more than first envisaged – to move into probate work after securing an alternative business structure licence.  Full story - The Law Society Gazette

FOCUS OF THE DAY: Voluntary code allows firms to compete for candidates on a level playing field, says Jonathan Smithers. The Law Society has announced it is replacing the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) as a signatory to the voluntary code of practice for the recruitment of trainee solicitors, settling any uncertainty about whether the code would remain in place for the forthcoming recruitment programme.  Full story - Solicitors Journal

FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has issued a ‘warning notice’ to criminal law firms involved in the legal aid boycott. The regulator said it is “concerned that solicitors and firms may not act in the best interests of each individual client” should the protocol issued by the London Criminal Courts Solicitors Association (LCCSA) be followed without “fully considering” each client’s circumstances. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The government has confirmed increases in court fees for divorce proceedings, possession claims, and general applications in civil proceedings and announced a new consultation on further hikes. This means that fees will increase: from £280 to £355 for issuing a possession claim in the county court; from £50 to £100 for general applications in civil proceedings for an application by consent and from £155 to £255, for a contested application (extensions to vary or extend an injunction for protection from harassment or violence are excluded); and from £410 to £550 for issuing divorce proceedings (with fee remission for those who need it, such as women in low wage households). FOCUS OF THE DAY: Practitioner groups have described Thursday's meeting with the justice secretary as ‘potentially constructive’ as a nationwide boycott over legal aid cuts looks set to continue. Representatives from the London Criminal Courts Solicitors’ Association, Criminal Law Solicitors’ Association and Big Firms Group met with Michael Gove at the Ministry of Justice’s headquarters in Petty France, London, for 45 minutes, followed by a meeting with MoJ advisers.
