In Leeds, Liverpool and Kingston upon Thames, witnesses who feel intimidated in cases relating to sexual and modern-day slavery offences can record their cross-examination evidence before trials start.

Today's Video Focus: Activists in Sudan say at least 27 people have been killed after security forces launched an assault on a camp at the centre of the country's protest movement in Khartoum, sending activists running for cover to escape the gunfire. Other sit-in protests around the country were also attacked in what appeared to be a co-ordinated push to crush the opposition movement, which has been calling on Sudan's military rulers to hand over power to civilian rule.




Focus of the Day Article:
Legal representation for immigration detainees is very poor, including the quality of advice given by solicitors, according to a charity that challenges detention in removal centres and prisons.
It argued that although the number of law firms allowed to provide advice had increased, lawyers’ expertise in the subject had dropped. It said interviewees responding to a survey “painted a damning picture of the quality of the legal advice surgeries” under the Legal Aid Agency’s detention duty advice (DDA) scheme.

Today's Video Focus: India's GDP or gross domestic product grew 5.8 per cent in the January-March period, the slowest rate of expansion recorded since the quarter ended June 2017, government data showed on Friday. That was worse than economists' expectations, and lower than 6.6 per cent in the previous quarter. A survey of economists by news agency Reuters had forecast GDP growth at 6.3 per cent annually in the quarter ended March 31.
