FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is to find an extra £249m of “savings” this year as part of government measures to reduce public debt, the Chancellor, George Osborne, revealed today. But the MoJ has insisted this will not affect legal aid or access to justice. This latest announcement takes the budget cut at the MoJ this year to nearly £1bn. The MoJ was already committed to reducing its budget from £7.1bn in 2014/15 to £6.4bn in 2015/16, under plans released by Mr Osborne in March’s Budget. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The Legal Aid Agency expects to claw back up to £2m a year in legal aid after new powers to recover unpaid costs from convicted offenders came into force today. Changes to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 will allow the agency to recover costs from convicted criminals where their money and assets have been frozen, the Ministry of Justice announced. Previously legal aid was recoverable only through a separate and, according to the MoJ, ‘often unsuccessful’ court battle after the criminal trial had finished. FOCUS OF THE DAY: Reforms to make criminals with means pay back legal aid costs to taxpayer must be applied appropriately, says LCCSA. New measures to make those convicted of crimes pay more towards their legal bills have came into force on 1st June, legal aid minister Shailesh Vara has announced. The changes are the latest in a package of legal aid reforms in the Crime and Courts Act 2013 and are designed to ensure those accused of a crime and wealthy enough to pay for some or all of their legal representation, do so. FOCUS OF THE DAY: The number of personal injury claims management companies (CMCs) has fallen below 1,000, it has emerged. From 2,300 at the start of 2013, the number of CMCs dropped dramatically to only 979 by the end of March this year, according to the latest figures from the Claims Management Regulation Unit (CMRU).
