Focus of the Day Article:  HM Revenue & Customs will not have to pay the £6,245 costs of a wine wholesaler who successfully appealed a decision notice, a tribunal has ruled. Judge Greg Sinfield, sitting in the First Tier Tribunal (Tax) in Hare Wines Ltd v Revenue & Customs (COSTS - application by Appellant for costs), made the distinction between a case with merits and one which was obviously meritorious. Today's Video Focus:  Police scuffled with demonstrators in Cape Town on Friday, as women returned to the streets calling for an end to gender-based violence in South Africa. Riot police confronted protesters, mainly women, as they demanded the government to take action following a spike in rapes and killings earlier this month. Many carried signs and attempted to physically attack police forces, who shoved them in response. The protest took place a day after thousands of women rallied outside parliament to pressure president Cyril Ramaphosa into declaring a state of emergency due to the rate of violence against women.


Focus of the Day Article: Vulnerable claimants and defendants should be given more support, the Civil Justice Council (CJC) has said in a report with seven recommendations for change. Full story - New Law Journal

Today's Video Focus:  One of the most-wanted criminals in Haryana managed to escape from a police lock-up in Rajasthan this morning, in a scene straight out of a Bollywood thriller. Six men barged into a police station in Alwar, 166 km from Delhi, at around 8.45 on Friday morning and fired several rounds of gunshots at the station building. The gang escaped with a man called Vikram Gujjar who was in the lock-up. The police are suspecting that the men used AK-47s rifles. Though 25 rounds appeared to have been fired, no one has been injured.
