Focus of the Day Article:
Lawyers are preparing a legal challenge over controversial national consent forms that ask victims of crime, including rape and sexual assault victims, to hand over their phones and digital devices to police or risk a prosecution not being brought. The forms state that, while crime victims can refuse consent and can explain why they don’t want to give consent, ‘it may not be possible for the investigation or prosecution to continue’ if they refuse.

Today's Video Focus: Almost a dozen Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed as well as scores injured on both sides in an ongoing spate of violence that saw hundreds of rockets launched by Gaza militants and massive air strikes by Israel. At least nine Palestinians, including seven civilians and two militants, have died in the Israeli strikes targeting the Gaza Strip since Saturday, the Gaza Health Ministry said, adding that dozens more have been injured. A pregnant woman and her 14-month-old baby were among those killed.

Junior lawyers have warned that aspiring solicitors risk being exploited if they are not paid a minimum salary while completing the work experience element of the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). In a letter to Paul Philip, chief executive of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the Law Society’s Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) urges the regulator to reinstate a mandatory minimum salary for both trainee solicitors and would-be lawyers undertaking the SQE.

Definitely not your usual prison – but HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire is trying something different to help rehabilitate those serving time. The women’s jail is running a unique project to build and run pop-up shops within the confine, aimed at preparing prisoners mentally to cope with normal life on release, and to gain the right skills to get employment.


 
Focus of the Day Article:
The Law Society receives around £30m each year from the practising certificate and turnover fees paid by each solicitor and regulated legal business. This money is used to fund the trade association activities that the Law Society focuses on. It explains its core focus as supporting its members but perhaps solicitors should be asking if it is really acting in their interests all the time?
