Trading Standards publishes guidance on conveyancing referral fees. The clock on a possible ban on referral fees from lawyers to estate agents has started running after new guidance on disclosure was published by National Trading Standards (NTS). Failing to disclose referral arrangements risks criminal prosecution, estate agents are told in the guidance, which the government has said will be given a year to see if it is effective.

Today's Video Focus: In northern Russia, seven men have come forward to claim they were tortured by police because of their religious views. The men are all Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their organisation was banned by Russia’s Supreme Court in 2017 as extremist and dozens of Jehovah’s Witnesses have since been detained across the country. Officials in Surgut initially denied the reports of torture, but now say they will investigate. President Vladimir Putin has called the prosecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses ‘utter nonsense’ and asked the Supreme Court for clarification on how the law is applied.




Focus of the Day Article:
Legalise assisted dying for terminally ill, say 90% of people in UK. Opinion poll shows growing support in Britain for change to law on right to die.

Employment tribunals are struggling to cope with a swelling backlog of claims that has risen from 13,360 to 23,700 outstanding cases in one year. The 77% growth has occurred since fees were abolished in July 2017, and comes as tribunals suffer a shortage of staff, judges and resources.

Dressed in navy blue blazers, white shirt and grey trousers, the pilot - with a black eye - smile as he crossed into India through the Attari-Wagah border, hours later than expected. Escorted by Pakistan Rangers till the Zero Line that marks the India-Pakistan land border, he was received by Indian security officers and whisked away.

The UK legal services market was valued at £35.1bn in 2018, increasing by 6.3 per cent at current prices on the previous year. When inflation is taken into account then market value increased by 3.7 per cent. The findings come from the 9th annual edition of the UK Legal Services Market Trends Report.
