The Court of Appeal has backed legal professional privilege in a landmark ruling on the status of documents generated during an internal investigation. In Serious Fraud Office v Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation [2018] EWCA Civ 2006, the Serious Fraud Office sought access to notes of interviews with current and former employees and other documents created by solicitors and forensic accountants during an internal investigation.

Today's Video Focus: An Egyptian court has sentenced 75 people, including senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders, to death for their part in protests against the 2013 military coup. Fifty others were given a life sentence. Among them was them Mohamed Badie, the Brotherhood’s spiritual leader. Those sentenced are accused of security-related offences, including incitement to violence and organising illegal protests.

Today's Video Focus: When Fraser Anning made his controversial maiden speech he blamed the demise of Australia's European-based immigration program on "the rise of [former prime minister Gough] Whitlam in the Labor party". But Liberal MP Tim Wilson rebuffed that version of history, tweeting "Fact: Liberal Prime Minister Harold Holt abolished the White Australia Policy over 50 years ago. It is one of our proudest achievements." So who's right?

Focus of the Day Article:
The issue of how vulnerable witnesses are examined in court is by no means a new issue, but it is one that has regularly been hit by the spotlight in recent years. This is due to a variety of factors but perhaps one of the biggest is the introduction of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO 2012). As a result of legal aid being cut from the majority of private family law cases, we have had the highest number of litigants in person to date. The latest Family Court quarterly statistics published in 29 March 2018 have shown that in 37% of cases neither party had representation.
