It has been three months since famine, which has been caused by a longstanding conflict between the government and rebels groups, was declared in some parts of South Sudan. But areas outside the famine zones are also suffering from severe food shortages. More than a million people in the country are on the brink of starvation. Some of them are trying to flee to neighboring Sudan for relief.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reacted to the incident and said that it was brave of her to take such a step. "It's a courageous and strong act by the woman," he said.

Referring to historic trends of contract interpretation, Lord Sumption offered a polite critique of Lord Hoffmann’s ‘broader approach to construction’, in which the surrounding circumstances are used to modify the effect of language, as in Investors Compensation Scheme Ltd v West Bromwich Building Society [1998] 1 All ER 98.
