Around 200 children were accepted by the UK, but as the registration process closed, the Guardian’s Mat Heywood found hundreds of adults and children were left with nowhere to go.


Focus of the Day story: The top 100 UK law firms achieved modest growth in 2016 but anticipate challenging market conditions ahead, according to PwC’s 25th annual Law Firms Survey. Today's video story: A post office worker foiled a knife-wielding robber in Cardiff by lashing out with a baseball bat. Paula Hooper, 52, struck the masked man on the arm when he demanded money from the till at Ely post office at about 08:30 BST on Tuesday. CCTV footage then shows her chasing the man out of the shop from behind the counter. Ms Hooper said she thought the incident was a "Halloween joke" at first. Postmaster Shady Taha, who was in his office at the time of the incident, described her as the "hero of the day".

Focus of the Day story: Solicitors’ professional indemnity insurers paid out around £2bn due to negligence claims in the 10 years to 2014, startling new figures released yesterday by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) revealed. Having collated statistics from most of the insurers currently active in the market, the regulator said around 142,000 claims were made in that decade, although as that figure includes block claims, the number of individual cases of negligence was “much higher”.
